An excellent review. It is a fine episode with an engaging story and good characterisations. I agree that the production was impressive too. The model work was very good for the most and the sets were impressive, especially the control room in the underground bunker. I feel that the sets and special effects in Blakes 7 have been too often unfairly criticised ..

@Anonymous: What I was trying to say was that the teleport should be controllable from the flight deck as well as from the teleport room - not that the teleport area should be located on the flight deck. I agree - that would be disastrous!

To my mind Gan is Little John, rather than Friar Tuck.

I'm sure the teleport must be separate to the flight deck as a security measure.
Yes as you are probably becoming aware, clothes play an important part in B7! As for the scene mentioned, I don't like to use stereotypes but perhaps it is a male female thing? The female B7 fans I have spoken to over time can usually see in an instant the body language clues etc in scenes like that. The usually unflappable Avon is played as being almost dithery in that scene with all the hesitating "umms...well I..." etc not to mention the staring into each others eyes - clearly a conscious decision by the actor to demonstrate that Avon is also interested & somewhat surprised by her interest in him.
But as you say, it is not possible to pick up everything on a first viewing and we all have different points of focus when we watch something.

I think Meegat was a fan service, for Avon fans like me. Among other things. :) And yes, Avon and Vila interplay over her was so much fun too. As well as watching Avon dealing with an adoring female, for a change. There were many adoring females in the audience by that time. :)

As for Avon's juvenile taunts at Blake, that he can do better - he has to be new at it. At leadership, I mean. That's another new survival skill he's acquiring while on the Liberator - piloting from Jenna, lock-picking from Vila, guns knowledge could've been from Cally, and leadership from Blake - I bet he never was a people's manager before.

Silver jacket - I also see at as symbolic for Avon trying on Blake's role of a shining messiah or whatever. :)
I think I’m going to become increasingly aware of the feelings of some of Avon’s female (and male) fan base! While I’ve became a big fan of Avon, I don’t quite see him in the same light as Meegat haha!

I did like Avon challenging Blake and couldn’t work it into the blog post. It was an interesting line - “think I’ll be able to handle it better than you?” I believe - and amused me because although they often have serious disagreements, Avon came across as such a schoolboy with that line. It was a couple of steps away from shouting “scaredy cat, can’t cut the mustard!”

Interesting story on the jacket. “Something flashier” he cried, and was presented with an outfit that required the rest of the crew to wear sunglasses.

I’m utterly unsurprised to discover there are many Lord Avon followers and couldn’t help but giggle at the description of the jacket as an ‘iconic piece’ - I still haven’t decided just how keen I am on it! I did certainly like the Bounty outfit though.

The scene in The Web was pointed out to me after I viewed it, but it wasn’t something I picked up on while watching and therefore hasn’t carried much weight in my mind.

It’s quite rare now for me to start with anything other than the first episode of a programme - I’m either sitting down with a dvd or tuning into the first episode of a series - so going back into something I’d experienced mid-series was an interesting change. The strength of (most) the characters have definitely been a big part of the appeal.

I read your first entry about Deliverance and was very curious how it would go on rewatch.

On my first watch I usually just want to be entertained and miss a lot of finer points - I'm amazed by how much you've picked up on the first run, by the way. Then if I become obsessed I'll rewatch and it's often a very different experience - I see so much more and want to write about everything or burst.

And I see the 2nd time through Deliverance was more rewarding for you too, especially Lord Avon part! :)

Now for me, even on the 1st run, Lord Avon was a favorite so that I barely noticed anything else - except that superb scene with Servalan and Travis. Yes, Servalan is awesome and she's a unique villain - I can't see her equal even up to this day. And Travis showed his humanity - with Servalan stomping on it ruthlessly yet sympathetically. That's fascinating about her - she can feel regret, she can sympathize, but she can just throw it away in a second. I'm glad she enticed you enough to watch the rest!

Back to Lord Avon. As I was watching in context, I felt almost like Meegat by that stage - ready to worship at his feet. She represented the audience, the feelings of Avon's fans finally acknowledged on screen.

Vila said: "Counting yourself, that makes two people who think you're wonderful." Yeah Vila, that and a couple of million of viewers, especially female ones. :D

It was great to see the softer side of Avon. He was gentle with her, didn't take advantage. And then he said to her, about himself: "That seems like a poor reward, somehow." A glimpse in how his superiority complex was covering self-hatred.

And Avon volunteering to lead the mission, and challenging Blake that he can do better, marks an important development for him, and follows from Breakdown. He's stuck on Liberator, can't leave - he needs more control over his situation, needs to try for leadership. He was a loner before ("I failed because I relied on other people").
And in this episode he tries on Blake's shoes. And finds out it's not easy - see his distress over losing Jenna. Responsibility (which comes with power) is hard. Their exchange with Blake in the end is superb - you picked up on it too!

Other parts of the episode weren't that good, but my idea to make the episode better would be to shrink them even more or throw them out - like the natives on Cephlon. And expand the fun parts - with Servalan and Lord Avon. :)

And yes, Terry Nation was running on fumes at this point, he didn't bother even to tie up Meegat story, she's just left hanging on the planet. Or did she leave with the rocket? She's just forgotten.

As for Blake - I'd say he cared about his crew safety, remember how he had to be restrained not to rush after Cally in SLD, how he was driving himself to save her, and then save Gan in Breakdown? He had a lot of guilt about his old resistance group killed by Travis. Blake is driven by guilt a lot, he can't lose anyone on his watch. So he cares in that sense.
But in the sense of letting the crew do what they want with themselves - no, no that.

Ah, and about the Silver Parka - I've heard Paul Darrow requested a change from the drab windbreaker he had in The Web/SLD. He wanted something flashier and he was given it, to our delight. My favorite look of his in S1! :)

Ah yes, Avon's silver outdoor jacket! For many of us 'Lord Avon' followers this is one of his iconic pieces. I don't know myself whether, as you suggest, it was just an unplanned accident that his jacket was so different to the others or whether the programme makers had realized that Avon had already developed into a unique character and it had been decided to design his clothes accordingly; there was that flash of silver in his Bounty outfit if you recall!
I have to take issue a little in your assessment that Avon was so "cold" earlier in the series, yes in normal situations he may give that impression, but when he determines that a woman is interested in him his defences do come down - you will recall the scene with Cally in The Web when there is no doubt that his body language, expressions and voice changed to show that he was warming to her suggestions. And we see that again here with Meegat. In both scenes he was called away for practical "work" reasons - in the Web because of Blake and here because he had to get back to the Liberator with the others. There is a clear sense given in both that if he had not been in a situation where he had no choice but leave his defences would have come down even more!

Thanks for the blog, it is always satisfying to delve into the finer details of my favourite TV programme!
